Panel: How Do We Close California’s Education Gap?
(National Center for the Preservation of Democracy 111 N. Central Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90012)
Wednesday, June 03, 2009, 7:30 pm
A Zócalo/Public Policy Institute of California Event
Moderated by Jim Newton, Editorial Pages Editor of the Los Angeles Times
Forty years ago, California´s higher education system was the envy of the nation. It´s bold strategy welcoming any resident who wanted to learn led to a doubling of enrolled students, and sparked similar efforts across the country. California ranked high among other states for its share of working adults with a bachelor´s degree. But that figure has declined sharply in the decades since. According to new research by the Public Policy Institute of California, by 2025, the state will fall nearly one million college graduates short of serving its economic needs. With the pressures of financing and pursuing an education in a stalling economy, vast demographic shifts including the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation and the influx of immigrants, and the ongoing struggle for stronger secondary education, California needs to recall and possibly adapt its long-heralded higher education vision. What prompted California´s fall from higher education excellence, and how can it be reversed? Zócalo hosts a panel including Campaign for College Opportunity Executive Director Michele Siqueiros and PPIC Associate Director Hans Johnson on the history and future of higher learning in California.

Worship Service for Peace, Renewal and Healing
(2525 W Vernon Ave Los Angeles, CA 90008-3927)
From: Rev. Dr. Clyde W. Oden, Jr., Senior Pastor, Bryant Temple
Dear Friend:
There comes a time when a people must declare: This far and no further. We have experienced too many deaths, too many shootings, and too much violence. The culture of violence and the conspiracy of silence or perhaps exhaustion of our compassion is troubling. We need to call on a power greater than our own – to address the issues of PEACE, RENEWAL AND HEALING.
Next Monday, caring people from throughout out community are going to gather and worship together, and pray together and lean on each other. Business as usual is not an option. Will you come and join us? We have invited everyone we know to come and stand together. Why wait for another march? Why wait for another vigil? Let’s stop being victims and let us join hands and hearts together.
Here are the details:
WHEN: MONDAY NIGHT – AUGUST 3, 2009
WHERE: Bryant Temple A.M.E. Church
WHO: A community that is tired of burying its young. A community tired of individual prayer vigils, and marches. A community of mothers and fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters and friends – sick and tired of being sick and tired!
WHAT: A Worship Service in which we are seeking God’s power for PEACE, RENEWAL AND
HEALING. There will be singing, praying and preaching. We have invited persons who have a special interest in the success of this service. They include our Community Intervention Professionals, Law Enforcement leaders, elected officials, and families who have been affected and infected by the problems of violence in our community. Finally, for the camera shy: The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS television) has asked to film this service. They are doing research into how various communities, particularly communities of faith are responding to the challenge of violence in the community. It is our prayer that the presence of cameras will not dampen your enthusiasm for this event.

As a reminder, the Conference is NOT happening at UTLA. Instead, it will be at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, which is on the northeast corner of Wilshire and Lucas. Free parking available on the roof of the building.
Conference is from 9-3 on Saturday and 9-1 on Sunday. The lineup for each day looks great so we are excited to see you.

real community organizing. Sunday will include a panel of 5 teachers who organize at their schools, in the community. The panelists will lay out different approaches to organizing allowing participants to grapple with advantages and disadvantages of various methods. 7pm Socialism: What it is and why we need it - USC
(University of Southern California, Leavey Library Auditorium, 651 West 35th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90089)
The word “socialism” has returned to the mainstream of American political debate. But there are widespread misconceptions of what socialism is–and what it isn’t.
Republicans fret that the U.S. is fast becoming a socialist country–with government spending on bank bailouts and Barack Obama’s proposed health care reform.
But the genuine tradition of “socialism from below” means something more than state intervention in the economy. Socialism is really about the struggle to oppose discrimination in all its forms and to put the needs of working people before corporate profits.
Come to this meeting to discuss the idea of socialism–and socialist strategies for changing the world.

Everything You’ve Been Told about Communism is Wrong
(UCLA)
Raymond Lotta's Campus Tour:
UCLA, Tue 11/3, 7pm
Rm 2160E UCLA Broad Art Center
From Los Angeles Independent Media:
You need to hear Raymond Lotta. Because you've been lied to about communism.
You need to hear Raymond Lotta. Because society does not have to be this way.
We can create a world in which there is no exploitation. A world in which people can live cooperatively and solve problems collectively. A world where individuals can flourish. But wait a minute...isn't communism a totalitarian nightmare? Don't all the textbooks and experts and memoirs agree? No, you\'ve been fed distortions about communism....By the same people who told you that the war in Iraq was about weapons of mass destruction...And by liberal and even some progressive scholars who don\'t want to see the world turned upside down. This is about the nightmare and horror that is THIS system. This is about the future of humanity and the future of the planet.
You need to hear Raymond Lotta. Because the new generation needs to learn about the actual and emancipating history of socialism in the 20th century. And we need to go further and do better in the next round of communist revolution.
Raymond Lotta is bringing revolution to campuses this Fall. Indicting this whole system of capitalism-imperialism as utterly unreformable and unredeemable. Talking about why the future of communist revolution is both viable and desirable because of the leadership and ongoing role of Bob Avakian.
If you yearn for a radically different world and want to learn about why communism will be a far better world...you need to hear Raymond Lotta.
If you want to defend this system and uphold the distortions about socialism, you should be there too...because Raymond Lotta is taking on all comers.
Raymond Lotta is a revolutionary intellectual who takes as his foundation Bob Avakia\'s new synthesis. He has written extensively on China during and after the Cultural Revolution, playing a major role in elucidating the actual thinking of Mao Tsetung and the so-called Gang of Four. In writings, talks, and online videos, he has fought to spread the truth--and refute the lies--about communist revolution in the Soviet Union in `1917-1956 and in China 1949-1976.
See the website: www.thisiscommunism.org
He has also done major work on political economy, including America in Decline and the series "Shifts and Faultlines in the World Economy" (at revcom.us) A recent speech, "Understanding the World Economic Crisis: System Failure and the Need for Revolution\" can be heard at: http://www.revolutionbooksnyc.org. Free Trolley Tour leaves at 12pm!
The secret is out! Inglewood, California is a haven for artists; that’s right, those creative types, the rebels, the painters and sculptors, the photographers and the illustrators of tomorrow. The success of the Third Annual Inglewood Open Studios is sure to raise eyebrows in nearby cities and in this unique local art community, just a crow’s flight from the Los Angeles Airport runway. The public is invited to visit a variety of emerging and established fine artists in their Inglewood studios. Some of the artists are graduates of Otis College of Art and Design in nearby Westchester, others have attended art schools across the country, and a few are self-taught. Some are relatively new to Inglewood, while others have lived in this area for years. Spearheaded by Renée A. Fox three years ago as a means to support the local artist movement in this diverse art community, the INGLEWOOD OPEN STUDIOS has blossomed into a force of creativity growing steadily every year.
Visit the participating artists at their studios:

Fox, Ginger Van Hook, Luke Van Hook, Ulysses Jenkins, Michael Massenburg, Gale McCall, Chris Mercier, Kenneth Ober, Joan Robey, Dustin Shuler, Stanley Smith, Holly Tempo, MonaLisa Whitaker and John Wynne.

The Great Los Angeles Walk - 9am
By Libby Molyneaux, LA Weekly:
I believe it was the famed poets Missing Persons who penned, "Nobody walks in L.A." How true. Why would we, when sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic is really what we do best here? Franklin Avenue's Mike Schneider got this crazy notion a few years ago to walk one particular street annually. So far, participants in The Great Los Angeles Walk have pounded Pico and Santa Monica boulevards to the beach from their easternmost points. This year, it's the pesky 'vards of Washington and Adams. Says Schneider, "We've all seen Los Angeles by car, but it's a whole different experience to get to know our fine city by foot. March along 14 miles of historic L.A. with a hundred or so other Angelenos at the same time, and you've got a story to tell around the Thanksgiving table the following week -- plus license to scarf down that third piece of pie." Promised sights: the Automobile Club of Southern California headquarters, the Golden State Mutual Life headquarters, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Roman Catholic Church and Ray Charles' old recording studio. Meeting spot: Shrine Auditorium

Opening Performance of “`And Christmas Came to Watts Too”
(Vermont Square UMC Church, 4410 South Budlong Avenue, Los Angeles)
This is the funky upbeat version of “The Gift of the Magi” story. The musical takes place in a ‘run of the mill’ community center and recreation hall, which becomes the center of national attention when “Oprah’s Angel’s Network” decides to pay a visit the center’s director to award a huge monetary gift for his good works with the citizens of that community. It is a heartwarming tale that brings a waning community together and proves that ‘miracles can happen’. Everybody is changed spiritually, including “Marie” the shunned bag lady of the local community.
