Reward offered in South LA murder

Moses NelsonThe Los Angeles Police Department is offering $50,000 for information leading to the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Moses Nelson. The 32-year-old father of three was shot dead on the morning of November 23, 2014  while walking down East 57th Street near Naomi Avenue in South LA. Police say a man riding a bicycle came toward Nelson and shot him several times.

Witnesses have come forward, but no one has been able to identify the suspect as the surveillance video did not capture his face, according to LAPD Detective Leonardo McKenzie. The video only showed the suspect’s clothing and the model of his bicycle. [Read more…]

Reward offered for information in homicide case

imagePolice are looking for three suspects in the stabbing death of 75-year-old Min Yin late last year. The Los Angeles City Council is offering a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible for his death.

Yin was assaulted Sept. 2, 2011 at men’s and boy’s clothing shop Joy & Louis Corp at 1320 E. 18th St. near South Central Avenue just south of the 10 Freeway.

Two men entered the shop as a third was exiting, and police say, one of the men stabbed Yin.

Yin, who lived in Arcadia but worked at Joy & Louis, was transported to LAC-USC Medical Center, where he died from his injuries on Dec. 26, 2011.

All three of the men who were in the store are suspects. The man who was seen on video exiting the store is described as a Latino, about 40 years old, six feet tall, weighing about 180 pounds.

imageThe second suspect is thought to be in his 20s, with a tattoo on the left side of his neck, short dark hair and is heavy set at 5 foot, 4 inches.

The third suspect is in his early 30s, is between 5 foot, 5 inches and 5 foot, 8 inches and weighs about 200 pounds. Both are Latino.

Police have released sketches of two of the suspects. Police consider all three armed and extremely dangerous.

City Council offers $75,000 reward for information on shooting of South LA toddler

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a motion authored by Council President Pro Tempore Jan Perry that authorized the issuance of a $75,000 reward for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for a shooting that killed 22-month old, Joshua Montes, and left his uncle, Josefat Canchola, in critical condition.

On May 23, 2011, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Josefat Canchola was holding his 22-month old nephew, Joshua Montes, on their front porch at 1278 East 55th Street when gunfire broke out and both were struck in the head. Joshua Montes died as a result of his injuries that evening and his uncle remains in critical condition.

“It is my hope that this reward will help us find the person or persons responsible for this unimaginable crime,” said Council President Pro Tempore Jan Perry in a press release. “These people obviously have no regard for human life and we need to do everything in our power to find them before they hurt anyone else.”

Los Angeles Police Department offers large reward in couple’s murder

In the early morning hours of August 4, Jerriell and Sulema Wilborn were driving near the intersection of Slauson Avenue and Main Street. As they pulled through the intersection, the couple was shot multiple times by gunfire coming from outside of their car.

To avoid further shots, 51-year-old Sulema Wilborn accelerated the car forward until she lost control, crashing into a nearby pole on the freeway off ramp in South Park. At 3:43 a.m., just minutes later, officials at the scene announced the couple had died.

image The Wilborns were well-known in South Los Angeles, as Sulema was a long-time activist who worked for celebrity lawyer Thomas Mesereau’s legal clinic and 49-year-old Jerriell worked with The Wrecking Crew Church’s community outreach program.

“If something happened, she was always there,” said Sulema’s daughter Ursila Ventura, reflecting on her mother’s death. “I could call her on anything, from the smallest to the biggest thing.”

After seven months, Los Angeles Police Department investigators David Torres and Louie Calzadillas have not found any suspects connected with the case. Family members have tried to come to peace with the loss of the couple.

“My uncle never had any enemies because he was a straight-forward person,” Jerriell’s niece Trisha Wilborn said. “People loved him, different cultures loved him.”

“We know where she is at even if it doesn’t take away what was done,” Christina Reyes, daughter of Sulemma, said. “I pray that whoever, whether you are one person or three people, will not have any peace.”

With the help of the Los Angeles City Council and Councilwoman Jan Perry, the police department announced today that a $75,000 reward would be offered to anyone with information leading to the identification and apprehension of any suspects in the case.

It is unclear whether the double-homicide was gang-motivated, but officials believe fear could be a factor as to why the community has not come forward with new information.

“The reason we are putting [the reward] out now is because we have been trying to work with as much information as we do have,” Calzadillas said. “We are putting it out to the community, and hopefully they will come forward with some more information to help us with the investigation.”

The hefty reward will be in effect for the next six months following today’s announcement.

Reward offered for information on shooting of 5-year-old boy in South L.A.

Update: On November 3, 2010 The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, acting on Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’ recommendation, added $25,000 in reward money to the city’s offer, bringing the total to $100,000.

Councilwoman Jan Perry received unanimous support from her council colleagues today for the issuance of a $75,000 reward for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the person or persons responsible for the death of a five-year old. The motion allows the City Council to provide a reward of up to $75,000 for information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this violent crime.

“This is an assault on our entire community. I hope that this reward motion will help the 77th Area detectives find the person or persons who shot and killed an innocent child on Halloween,” said Perry. “If you have any information, please come forward for the sake of this family and our community at large.”

On Sunday, October 31, 2010, at 2 p.m., five year old Aaron Shannon, his uncle Terrance Shannon (27 yrs. old), and his grandfather William Shannon (56 yrs. old) were standing in the backyard of 1007 East 84th Street when unknown suspects walking eastbound through the alley and fired numerous shots. All three were struck by gunfire and transported to the hospital. Terrance and William were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from the hospital; Aaron was hospitalized in grave condition and died on November 1, 2010.

Reward for murder of South LA man

The Los Angeles City Council today voted to offer a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects the killers of a South Los Angeles man. Twenty-eight-year-old Melvin James Comeaux, Jr. was gunned down August 24, 2008 near the corner of Normandie Avenue and 94th Place,. The two male suspects were riding bicycles and one of them fired at Comeaux, who died a week after the shooting. Police have not determined a motive for the shooting.
Comeaux’s mother, Wyvetta Gilchrist, told the City Council, “I would just like to ask that if there’s somebody out there who knows anything about Melvin’s murder, that they would come forward with information because the next person could be your loved one, your family member.”
