Dorsey High School’s culinary program

Dorsey High School culinary program

By treating their classroom like a restaurant, and their kitchen like it was Gordon Ramsays, these would-be chefs are earning the professional skills of the business world. Now theyre adding multimedia talents to their repertoire by producing a monthly online cooking show. Mixing Home Economics with a little tech has conjured a lot of enthusiasm among students, willing to relinquish their Saturdays for the project. The best part: enjoying the fruits of their labor.

This Hospitaitly Food Service/Culinary Program has survived the times and has been developed with loving care by the teacher and the Dorsey community. Ms Marzette’s heart, soul, and love for the students and the Culinary Arts pathway in Home Economics has been exceptional over the years. I have been a proud supporter for many years. This is a model Career Technical Education course sequence in LAUSD and well noted across the state. The students have participated in FHA_HERO with CDE, ProStart with the CalRestauarant association and numerous political and community events. They have an ongoing relationship with the Obama political team in the Crenshaw neighborhood. Salutes to Dorsey HS under the direction of Principal, Bartleson. Federal Perkins funds have provided many resources to Dorsey’s culinary arts program over the last few years.

  2. It’s not only teaching kids a trade, it’s also teaching them how to eat right. This is a great thing, I never had a culinary program at my school. I wish my high school had one, it probably would of been a fun class to take.

  3. This sounds like a great program. There is so much that the students might enjoy from this that it is endless on where they might go from this experience. I don’t live in the LA area but do travel there for business once a month. There is definitely that “hollywood” atmosphere and most of the folks that I meet with for business are aspiring writers.

One suggestion, for programs like this, I assume they might except donations (i.e. money, cameras, cooking tools, etc). Might be a good idea to put contact information.
