Many driving through the Crenshaw district might head straight for the massive Baldwin Hills Mall — or simply pass through on their way to other parts of Los Angeles.
Few notice the massive, weed-filled lot that is Marlton Square, or know about its long history.

Clippers owner Donald Sterling was punished by the NBA for racist comments made against blacks, and L.A.’s leading politicians spoke out yesterday in response.
Mayor Eric Garcetti supported NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s decision to ban Sterling from the league for life, among other penalites.
“None of us as Americans and certainly not as Angelenos will stand for this sort of racism that we heard articulated,” said Garcetti. “This city is open for business, it’s ready for greatness, and that is reflected behind me.” [Read more…]
On a 12-1 vote, the Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to completely redo the way it disposes of garbage from apartment complexes and businesses in a hope to clean up a situation that some people think is stinky.

The bill was spearheaded by Councilman Jose Huizar. It would restructure garbage collection by giving private haulers one of 11 franchises across Los Angeles. It will also require the haulers to recycle. In the past, trash collectors of businesses and apartments simply dumped all trash in Los Angeles area landfills. [Read more…]
