At the corner of Redondo and West boulevards in Inglewood, Chuco’s Justice Center is painted with a vibrant mural of kids waving posters promoting justice, peace, and preparation for college — not prison.
Chuco’s led a presentation on Thursday about safety in schools — part of a national “week of action” spearheaded by “Dignity in Schools.” The campaign aims to teach young people about human rights, reduce the number of kids going to prison, and push for more educational centers like Chuco’s.
More than 90 students from 16 to 24 are enrolled in Chuco’s program, which is a project of the Youth Justice Coalition. Each student is provided a free bus pass, cooked lunch, and a day care room for those who have kids. Most of the students have spent time in juvenile hall, probation camp, county jail, or even state prison.
